PHOENIXVISITS HAITI WITH MFR AND THE UN FOUNDATION

From musicforrelief.org:

Today, Dave “Phoenix” Farrell, a member of the two-time Grammy winning, multiplatinum band Linkin Park, returned from a trip to Haiti with the United Nations Foundation to see firsthand how the United Nations is helping Haiti rebuild, fifteen months after a major earthquake killed hundreds of thousands and destroyed much of the nation’s infrastructure. Among the many hardships facing Haitian women is the threat of sexual violence and intimidation. While in Haiti, Phoenix met with UN staff and Haitians to learn how something as simple as solar street lights are protecting women and children from violence at night in the camps, and how their charity Music for Relief has already helped to protect thousands.

“Haiti may have fallen from the headlines, but the country still needs our help,” says Linkin Park’s bassist Phoenix. “We can’t forget about the suffering that is still going on in Haiti. After meeting UN staff and Haitian families, I urge all of our fans to donate through Music For Relief’s Download to Donate for Haiti. It is an easy way for fans to stay engaged and together we can help the UN light the future for Haiti’s women and girls.”

“The UN and its partners, including the U.S. government, have helped Haitians make significant progress and we can be proud of the work the UN has done,” said UN Foundation’s Vice President for Public Policy and Better World Campaign Executive Director Peter Yeo, who accompanied Phoenix on the trip. “This trip reminded me how important it is to keep Haiti’s women and girls at the top of the international agenda. Something as simple as a lighted pathway can make a huge difference for a woman trying to survive the night without fear of violence. We all have a role to play in helping the UN help Haiti and everyone can make a difference.”

Over the past months, 200 cost-efficient, environmentally friendly and durable LED streetlights have been installed by the UN’s Population Fund with the guidance of Haitian women. The lamps, provided with support from the UN Foundation, Music for Relief, and USAID, are already leading to a reduction of violent incidents. In addition, regular patrols by the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) and the Haitian police are helping to reign in crime.

New Linkin Park Song Available, DTD for Japan Now Live.

From mikeshinoda.com:

This week, we got an amazing letter from the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, acknowledging Music For Relief and Linkin Park’s ongoing efforts in Haiti & environmental protection (Read it here.). It read “Both your international and local commitments are a valuable contribution to our global efforts to build a better world. What you do through your music, your fans, your entrepreneurial spirit, and most importantly your passion, is commendable.” I wanted to share that thought with you, because I want you to feel the same pride we do–the good feeling that comes from making an effort to help someone else who needs it.

With that said, I’m asking all readers of this blog to act, and get something in return.

We are thrilled to announce that the NEW www.downloadtodonate.org Japan site is up now. Donate $10 or more, and get access to great music. We intend to add more tracks in the coming months; anyone who donates will have access to these tracks PLUS future tracks that get added. Right now, we have new recordings from Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Angels & Airwaves, B’z, Hoobastank, Sara Bareilles, Flyleaf, Staind, Slash + Myles Kennedy, Counting Crows, Plain White T’s, Elliott Yamin, Enrique Iglesias, and Linkin Park.

The Linkin Park song is entitled “Issho Ni,” meaning “we’re in this together.” It’s an instrumental song that I cooked up this week to benefit the cause.

Help Me Choose Which Tee We Should Make

From mikeshinoda.com:

As I mentioned on Twitter today, I’m designing a tee for Music For Relief, to benefit relief efforts in Japan. I want you guys to vote below, to tell me which one we should make. We’re going into production ASAP, so vote right away.

An 8.9 magnitude earthquake rocked Japan on March 11th, 2011, causing massive destruction and an enormous tsunami that smashed into coastal areas of the Pacific Ocean. Thousands of buildings have been destroyed and the death toll is rising rapidly. The National Weather Service has issued Tsunami Warnings to over 50 countries.

Slight Update: Tour, Haiti, The UN, and Download To Donate

From mikeshinoda.com:

Quick shout out to Ian Rogers for the great pic from last night’s show in San Jose. It feels good to be back on the road–Chester is feeling much better, and the shows have been going well. Last night was an interesting one. Two shows ago, I spilled a bit of water on my keyboard; last night, a few of the keys decided to stop working. We have a backup keyboard, but it decided to be broken as well. So, I was forced to play the keyboard with broken keys. While I played, I found out that if I hit the busted keys, they made an obnoxious sound…so I played the entire night changing and transposing notes on the fly–as I played and sang–to avoid the low A and A#. It kept things interesting…fun for one night, but not something I want to do all the time!

Speaking of yesterday, I want to say a big “thank you” to all the people we met and visited with, especially the folks from the UN, UN Foundation, and Facebook.

We had a busy day–4 of the guys were in LA meeting with the UN reps, and Phoenix and I were at Facebook HQ in the Bay. It was my first time visiting their offices; I was pretty impressed by the unassuming nature of the place, and the earnest warmth of the staff. There are a lot of LP fans at Facebook, and although there’s no way we could meet with everyone there, I wish we could have. Thanks to Randi and the staff for your hospitality.

As some of you saw (the link is now updated in my post below), we participated in a “Facebook Town Hall” online discussion with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, plus members of the UN Foundation to talk about the situation in Haiti, and how you can help.

People often ask, “is there something (simple) I can I do?” Two headlines stood out to me:

First, the UN Foundation is currently engaged in a campaign that delivers solar lights to the people in Haiti. Many are still living in tent villages; darkness provides a cover for crime and accidents. These lights turn the sunlight (which is in no short supply) into a form of protection for them. It’s a great campaign, and we’re excited about it.

Second, since the UN Foundation is our partner on Download To Donate, all you need to do is visit the site in order to support the UN Foundation’s effort. Click on the link, donate $10US, and you get tons of music (you get over 60 songs right now, with more to be added on a continual basis), plus 100% of the money flows through DTD to the effort in Haiti.

Or, if you want an even simpler solution, text “RELIEF” to 41010 to donate $10.

Thanks for your help. See you at Staples Center tonight!
