Joe Hahn at GR2 Year of the Dragon opening event- Pictures

From giantrobot.com:

The Giant Robot 2 (GR2) presents: YEAR OF THE DRAGON – an art exhibition featuring Dragons! This is the official GR2 Grand Re-Opening as well as our beloved Michelle Borok’s Farewell…

Michelle Borok who is coincidentally Year of the Dragon, began as a clerk at Giant Robot LA and quickly found herself managing all locations, curating exhibitions, building the brand, and needless to say, much much more. She will be moving to Mongolia.

“While the Year of the Rabbit was characterized by calm and tranquility, the Year of the Dragon will be marked by excitement, unpredictability, exhilaration and intensity. The Rabbit imbues people with a sense of cautious optimism, but people respond to the spirit of the Dragon with energy, vitality and unbridled enthusiasm, often throwing all caution to the wind – which can be an unwise move: The Dragon is all about drama but if you take unnecessary risks, you may find yourself starring in your own personal tragedy.”

The exhibition includes work by:

Andrice Arp, Robert Bellm, Aaron Brown, Elliot Brown, Stasia Burrington, Bjorn Calleja, Ako Castuera, Sean Chao, Louise Chen, Shawn Cheng, James Chong, Luke Chueh, Chris Cilla, Jesse Fillingham, Cam Floyd, Harrison Freeman, Renee French, Gabe Gonzales, Kio Griffith, Joe Hahn, Nao Harada, Hiro Hayashi, David Horvath, Kerry Horvath, Martin Hsu, Mark Ingram, Mari Inukai, Elizabeth Ito, Marc Johns, Jeremiah LaTorre, Little Friends of Printmaking, Tessar Lo, Bradford Lynn, Miso, Gary Musgrave, Mark Nagata, Ming Ong, Martin Ontiveros, Sana Park, Sidney Pink, Jarrett Quon, Jesse Reklaw, Sara Saedi, Ryan Jacob Smith, Dave Stolte, Ken Taya, Edwin Ushiro, Christine Vincent, Steven Weissman, Heidi Woan, Yoskay Yamamoto, Jeni Yang, Yejin Oh, Sashiko Yuen

Bid on Kobayashi Helmet

From linkinpark.com:

When Linkin Park was in Singapore during our tour in Asia, we had the opportunity to meet Formula 1 driver Kamui Kobayashi. We talked about Music For Relief’s activities to support earthquake and tsunami recovery in Japan. He said he wanted to help, so we teamed up with Sauber F1 team and Kobayashi sponsor Goodsmile Company and designed an original helmet that Kobayashi will wear for the last race of the season at the Brazilian Grand Prix on November 27th. Following the race, we’ll auction off the helmet HERE and all proceeds will benefit Music For Relief’s Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief. The auction starts on Thursday, November 24 at 9:00 am EST.

Linkin Park Accepts UN Foundation

Listen here to the acceptance speech.

2011 UN Foundation/UNA-USA Annual Global Leadership Dinner

From unausa.org:

For 53 years, the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) annual awards dinner has brought together policymakers, diplomats, UN supporters, business leaders, and celebrities. The event calls attention to the vital role the UN plays in helping the global community advance peace, prosperity and justice, as well as recognizes individuals and corporations for their outstanding leadership in advancing UN causes—from global health and economic development, to education and environmental sustainability. In 1998, Ted Turner was honored and, during his acceptance speech, announced his historic $1 billion pledge to the UN, resulting in the United Nations Foundation; UNA-USA is a program of the UN Foundation. This will be the second year the dinner will be hosted by both UNA-USA and the Foundation.

Honorees:

Prime Minister of Norway Jens Stoltenberg with the Champion of Global Change Award for his strong personal leadership in world affairs and international causes, as well as pay tribute to Norway for its exemplary support of the United Nations.

Susana Malcorra, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for the Department of Field Support, for her dedication to the United Nations and its work around the world.
Rex Tillerson, Chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil for their commitment to health and ending malaria deaths by 2015.

Linkin Park, a rock group, for using their voice to highlight the importance of the United Nations in responding to disasters and climate change around the world and for mobilizing their fans to help those in need.

Asma Jahangir, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association and Chairperson, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, with the Leo Nevas Human Rights Award, for her work in promoting humans rights.

From un.org:
I am proud to be the first Secretary-General in United Nations history to have had a Facebook town hall meeting with Linkin Park. But I must admit I wasn’t always so hip. Some years ago, my daughter said: “I really like Linkin Park.” I said: “Linkin Park? Is he Korean?”

Linkin Park teams with UN on Haiti energy project

From ctv.ca:

The rock band Linkin Park is teaming up with the U.N. to bring clean energy to Haitian families.

Band members joined Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at a Tuesday news conference announcing their involvement in an initiative to replace dirty energy sources like kerosene, charcoal and wood with solar and other clean, sustainable power.

Rapper and co-frontman Mike Shinoda says the band began funding disaster relief efforts worldwide after the devastating 2004 tsunami in Asia.

The Raid: Film Score Update

From mikeshinoda.com:

The score for The Raid is steadily moving along. In between Linkin Park studio sessions–which are also underway–I’m working on the feature-length score for this brutal Indonesian action movie. With a good chunk of the movie now sounding good, and a lot of great hype and reviews coming from folks who have gotten a chance to see the film, I’m excited to tell you a little more about it.

Writing big, nasty parts for a fast-paced action scene have come pretty naturally for me. There are lots of moments with big beats and unique, exciting sounds. But one thing I’ve found that’s different in writing for film (versus an album) is being aware of how and when to make the music transparent. The music needs to be invisible at times. Writing a Linkin Park song is usually about our personal stories, not someone else’s. And an LP song is designed to draw you in, to catch your ear with words, melodies, and sounds. Often, the techniques I might use to create a catchy sound or “hook” would actually take away from a scene in The Raid, so it’s been a fun challenge to learn when and how to let the movie’s story come first.

I also enlisted the help of Joe Trapanese, best know for his work with Daft Punk on the TRON score and soundtrack. Joe also did strings on the newest M83 album, “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming.” Joe comes from a composing / arranging / film background, and we’re finding great ways to inform and compliment one anothers’ work in the music for this movie.
